Course Overview
Provides a practical introduction to common instrumental techniques used in the field of analytical chemistry. Chromatographic techniques introduced include gas chromatography (GC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ion chromatography (IC). Spectroscopic techniques introduced include infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy, ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectroscopy and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Mass spectrometric techniques introduced include gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), liquid chromatography-triple quad mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and inductively coupled plasma-triple quad mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS). Hands-on laboratory exercises will demonstrate the fundamental principles and routine applications of these analytical techniques.
Prerequisite(s)
- Completion of post-secondary general chemistry. Preferred to have knowledge of organic chem as well.

- Liguid chromatography -mass spectrometry (LC-MS)

- Atomic Absorption spectroscopy
- Molecular spectroscopy including:
- Infrared absorption spectroscopy.
- Ultraviolet/Visible absorption spectroscopy.
- Fluorescence spectroscopy.
- Demonstrate the steps involved in qualitative and quantitative instrumental analysis.
