Advanced Forensic Nurse Examiner

​This workshop is intended for registered nurses who have taken the Forensic Nurse Examiner training and who are new or returning to their roles as Forensic Nurse Examiners. Students will have an opportunity to observe a mock examination, and to see, hold and touch tools that are used in the forensic examination. Other topics covered include consent, medical legal documentation, and forensic sample collection. Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn a digital badge titled "Sexual Assault Forensic Examination Skills".

• FSCT 7840 or by permission of the forensics department.

​This course is intended for registered nurses who have taken the Forensic Nurse Examiner training and who are new or returning to their roles as Forensic Nurse Examiners. Students will gain the knowledge required to effectively consider and critically analyze legal requirements that affect the care of patients following intimate partner or sexual violence and to provide objective, accurate, evidence-based testimony in judicial proceedings. Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn a digital badge titled “FNE Witness Testimony Skills”.

​This course is intended for registered nurses who have taken the Forensic Nurse Examiner training and who are new or returning to their roles as Forensic Nurse Examiners. Students will learn medical forensic documentation skills including history taking, charting, and recording of patient statements in an objective manner. Students will participate in a peer review of medical forensic documentation. Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn a digital badge titled “Legal Documentation of Injuries”.

​This course is intended for Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, Police/Law Enforcement, Investigators, Victim Service Workers and Attorneys who work with victims of interpersonal violence or who have taken the Forensic Nurse Examiner training. Prerequisite baseline understanding of forensic sciences required. Students will learn about the seriousness of strangulation from a medical and legal perspective, how to identify acts of strangulation in cases of interpersonal violence, assess for strangulation injuries, general medical management, Canadian laws and forensic documentation specific to this unique type of violence. Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn a digital badge titled “Forensic Examination of Non-Fatal Injuries".​

​This course is intended for Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, Police/Law Enforcement, Investigators, and Attorneys who work with victim of interpersonal violence or who have taken the Forensic Nurse Examiner training and who are new or returning to their roles as Forensic Nurse Examiners. Prerequisite baseline understanding of forensic sciences required. Students will learn about the seriousness of mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) from a medical and legal perspective, how to identify mTBI in cases of interpersonal violence, assess for injuries and symptoms, general medical management and forensic documentation specific to this type of injury from interpersonal violence. Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn a digital badge titled "Forensic Examination of Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries".

• FSCT 7840 OR Currently working/returning to work in field of health care, law enforcement or investigation specific to victims of interpersonal violence OR by permission of the forensics department.

This course is intended for Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, Police/Law Enforcement, Investigators, and Attorneys who work with adult and adolescent victim of sexual assault or who are already Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, or who have taken the Forensic Nurse Examiner training and who are new or returning to their roles as Forensic Nurse Examiners. Prerequisite baseline understanding of forensic science is required. Students will learn about the normal anatomy of the adult and adolescent male, female, and transgender genitalia, examine common medical conditions seen on genital examination, review examination techniques and documentation of genital injury. An overview of the current research on genital injury, genital mutilation, and forensic examination will be discussed with respect to medical and legal implications. Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn a digital badge titled "Sexual Assault Examination – Normal and Abnormal Findings".​

​This course is intended for registered nurses who have taken the Forensic Nurse Examiner training. Students will learn to build therapeutic relationships with survivors that present as indigenous. Students will learn how to provide the necessary foundation and tools to move towards cultural competency while providing trauma informed and culturally aware forensic nursing care. Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn a digital badge titled “Indigenous Cultural Awareness and Safety in Forensic Nursing".​
