About the program
This specialized training program has been designed to provide you with the theoretical understanding and practical skills needed to diagnose and repair the sophisticated systems found in contemporary motor vehicles. The administrative and business training components of the program provide you with laddering opportunities for advancement through baccalaureate pathways in business administration and technology management. The ASTO Ford ASSET Option consists of four technical training terms with two paid 22-week co-op work terms in a Ford dealership facility.
Who it’s for
Automotive Service Technicians are proficient in using computerized diagnostic equipment to test, adjust and repair sophisticated vehicle systems. With the Ford ASSET Option, beyond acquiring your ASTO Diploma and writing the Level 1, 2, 3 SkilledTradesBC Certificate of Qualification exams, you also receive specialized training for Ford certification in brakes, electrical, steering and suspension, engine mechanical, and heating ventilation and air conditioning systems.
Ford dealerships sponsor ASSET students during their work terms, so you gain real world experience while also receiving a wage and the opportunity to demonstrate your skills. You may even have a job lined up upon graduation. Many Ford dealers hire graduates from the program; however, your career is not limited to Ford as the ASTO Diploma program and SkilledTradesBC certification applies throughout BC and most Canadian provinces as an Automotive Service Technician.
What grads can do
Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive an Automotive Service Technician and Operations Diploma, qualify for credit towards all four levels of technical training requirements in the provincial Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship program and receive 2000 hours of time service requirement towards your apprenticeship.

BCIT transfers the student's name, contact information, Personal Education Number (PEN), and the name and date of the completed Foundation program to SkilledTradesBC. This information is used for the purposes of tracking successful completions in order to grant credit towards apprenticeship where applicable, and communicating with trainees to promote continuation in an apprenticeship program.Co-operative education
This is a cooperative education program that combines academic terms with paid cooperative work terms. Cooperative education is not an option but an integral part of this program, subject to the same performance criteria as the program itself.
While co-op coordinators assist with job placements for students, it must be recognized that during certain periods of the business cycle, job placements may be difficult to find. It is then the responsibility of the student to work with the coordinator (and on his/her own) to find a meaningful work experience.
The complete cooperative education policy including student, Institute and employer responsibilities is available through the Centre for Workplace Education (Co-op) office and the Registrar's Office.
For more information, please visit the Centre for Workplace Education (Co-op), located in Building NW5 at the Burnaby campus.Co-op coordinator: 604-432-8291

Graduate employment outcomes
The BCIT student outcomes report presents summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2021-2023 BCIT Outcomes Surveys of 2020-2022 graduates and for Degree 2019-2021 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates’ labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education.
