Construction of Mass Timber Structures

​Construction planning guides the scheduling and coordination of logistics associated with the execution of mass timber projects. Students will review the main types of prefabricated mass timber products and consider the advantages and challenges of their use in mass timber construction. They will summarize the roles and activities of construction installers in the delivery, handling and installation of mass timber products in coordination with other stakeholders. They will review basic principles of rigging, crane and equipment use, and applicable regulations for overhead hoisting of mass timber products. Students will summarize guidelines and best practices for construction site safety, fall protection, and aerial equipment for installing mass timber structures.

Students will examine project planning, crew and site preparations, and material management for the safe and efficient installation of mass timber structures. They will read and interpret project drawings and documents and analyze options and approaches to implementing the installation of a given mass timber structure from receipt of materials to final installation. They will learn best practices for the handling and protection of mass timber materials and techniques and standards for installing mass timber components, connections, fasteners, and temporary bracing. Students will review the safe use of specialized tools and equipment and troubleshoot problems and defects in mass timber installations.

​Students will examine the different types of components and methods used for producing building enclosure assemblies for mass timber construction. They will learn about the characteristics of common materials used in building enclosures as well as their installation methods and sequences. They will learn about the benefits and drawbacks of various enclosure structural systems in the context of given primary structural systems. Moisture management and mitigation strategies will also be presented.​

• 60% in TMBR 1020 and 60% in TMBR 1030

​Students will learn about the installation methods and components used for interior floor, wall and ceiling systems in mass timber construction. They will learn best practices for fire protection and sound installation in mass timber buildings. Students will consider strategies for the installation of mechanical, electrical and plumbing services and troubleshoot installation problems.​

• 60% in TMBR 1020 and 60% in TMBR 1030 and 60% in TMBR 1040

In this practical training, students will apply theory and industry best practices in mass timber construction. They will gain hands-on experience in the on-site installation of a mass timber structure and associated components according to specifications. Students will apply safe practices for tool and equipment operation and site management. They will use project drawings to verify materials and work as a team to install mass timber structural components and connections according to specifications. Students will participate in the safe lifting and handling of mass timber structural components under instructor supervision. They will demonstrate mass timber construction skills including layout, cutting, drilling and inserting fasteners according to specification.​
