Course Overview
This course teaches students how to select suitable materials for asphaltic concrete design using the Marshall method equipment. Topics include plant and paving quality control, asphaltic cement testing, aggregate testing, and calculations for asphaltic design. Laboratory sessions include producing an asphaltic paving mix, making specimens, testing specimens, and analyzing test results using the Marshall method.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Identify the types and uses of asphaltic cements, liquid asphalt, and air blown asphalt.
- Perform required asphalt cement tests.
- Calculate and plot test results.
- Review testing procedures in accordance with standards and codes.
- Design asphaltic concrete mixes using the Marshall method.
- Illustrate and explain the various asphalt plants' functions and performance.
- Illustrate and identify procedures for subgrade preparation for paving including compaction, inspection and quality control.
- Identify types of pavement failures and outline repair procedures for each.
